Push for raw milk intensifies despite illness outbreaks, warnings

The push for raw milk legalization is gaining momentum in state legislatures even as health officials report a growing number of illness outbreaks linked to unpasteurized dairy products. At least 12 states have introduced bills this year to expand access to raw milk, with three states passing legislation making it easier to sell directly to consumers.

The movement is driven by a coalition of libertarian-minded consumers, small-scale dairy farmers, and wellness influencers who argue that pasteurization destroys beneficial bacteria and enzymes. However, the CDC has documented 85 outbreaks linked to raw milk between 2013 and 2023, resulting in over 750 illnesses and nearly 100 hospitalizations. In the first four months of 2026 alone, three separate outbreaks — in Iowa, Colorado, and Missouri — have sickened at least 40 people, primarily children.

Small changes in your daily routine can make a big difference in how you feel.

The raw milk debate has become a flashpoint in the broader conversation about food freedom versus food safety. Proponents point to Europe's more permissive raw milk policies and argue that responsible farming practices can eliminate risks. Public health officials counter that no amount of careful farming can guarantee safety from pathogens like E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria, which can contaminate even the cleanest operations.

What This Means For You: If you're considering raw milk for yourself or your family, understand that the health risks are real and well-documented — particularly for children, pregnant women, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. The decision isn't just about personal freedom; it's about the vulnerability of the people you feed. If you want beneficial bacteria, pasteurized fermented products like yogurt and kefir provide probiotics without the pathogen risk.
