R.I.’s governor nominates two women for state judgeships

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee has nominated two women to state judgeships, continuing a trend of diversifying benches across the country. The nominations, if confirmed, would bring the Rhode Island Superior Court closer to gender parity, a milestone that many state courts have yet to achieve.
The nominees bring complementary backgrounds. One is a career public defender with two decades of experience representing indigent clients, and the other is a former federal prosecutor who has handled complex civil litigation. Their combined experience spans criminal defense, prosecution, commercial disputes, and constitutional law.

The nominations come at a time when the composition of state courts is under increasing scrutiny. Only 36% of state judges nationwide are women, despite women comprising more than half of law school graduates for the past two decades. Rhode Island currently ranks 28th among states for gender representation on its courts.
Judicial diversity matters not just symbolically but practically. Research has consistently shown that judges with different life experiences bring different perspectives to sentencing, family law, and civil rights cases. A 2024 study published in the American Law and Economics Review found that mixed-gender panels were 12% less likely to issue unanimous rulings, suggesting that diverse perspectives lead to more thorough deliberation.
What This Means For You: The judges who serve on your state courts make decisions that directly affect your life, from custody arrangements to property disputes to criminal sentences. If you care about who sits on those benches, pay attention to judicial nominations in your state. They receive far less media coverage than federal appointments but often have more immediate impact on your daily life.
