Bucs Add 62-TD QB as Possible Baker Mayfield Backup

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers moved quickly after the 2026 NFL Draft to address their quarterback depth, signing Chandler Morris — the most productive undrafted quarterback available — to compete for the backup role behind Baker Mayfield.
Morris's college production was remarkable: 62 total touchdowns across his final two seasons at Virginia, including 47 passing and 15 rushing. He averaged 8.4 yards per attempt and completed 67% of his passes, numbers that typically translate to at least late-round draft capital.

So why did he go undrafted? The answer lies in the intersection of physical limitations and a historically deep quarterback class. At 6-foot and 195 pounds, Morris is smaller than every starting quarterback in the NFL. His arm strength grades as below average by NFL standards, and his deep ball accuracy drops significantly outside the numbers.
But what Morris lacks in physical tools, he compensates for with preparation and processing speed. Virginia coaches described him as the most film-dedicated quarterback they'd worked with, routinely spending extra hours breaking down opponent tendencies. That mental edge is what made him productive despite physical limitations, and it's what could keep him on an NFL roster.
The Buccaneers' current backup situation is fluid. Kyle Trask, a 2022 second-round pick, has shown modest improvement but hasn't convinced the coaching staff he can win games if Mayfield goes down. Morris offers a different skill set — more mobile, more experienced in pro-style concepts — that could complement Mayfield's play-extending style.
Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator has a history of developing smaller, mobile quarterbacks, which increases Morris's chances of making the practice squad at minimum.
**What This Means For You:** The Bucs' quarterback situation behind Mayfield is one to watch in training camp. If Morris outperforms Trask in preseason, the backup job could shift — and in fantasy football, a Mayfield injury would become more consequential if Morris, a dual-threat option, takes over rather than Trask, a traditional pocket passer. Monitor training camp reports from late July onward.
