Cobi Jones' Galaxy career honored with statue at Dignity Health Sports Park

The Los Angeles Galaxy unveiled a bronze statue of Cobi Jones outside Dignity Health Sports Park on Sunday, honoring the most decorated player in franchise history. The ceremony took place before the Galaxy's match against Real Salt Lake, with former teammates, coaches, and fans in attendance.
Jones played 12 seasons with the Galaxy, appearing in over 300 matches and helping the club win three MLS Cup titles. He also earned 164 caps for the United States national team — a record at the time of his retirement — and played in three World Cups. After retiring as a player, he remained with the organization as a broadcaster and ambassador.

The statue is the latest in a growing trend of MLS clubs honoring their foundational players. Jones joins a short but growing list of American soccer icons immortalized in bronze, reflecting the league's increasing comfort with its own history.
For Galaxy fans, the honor is deeply personal. Jones represents the bridge between the league's scrappy early years and its current status as a globally relevant competition. He was there when the Galaxy played in the Rose Bowl and was still there when they moved to their own stadium. That continuity matters in a city that has seen sports franchises come and go.
What This Means For You: If you care about American soccer, this matters because it signals that MLS is taking its history seriously. The league is still young enough that its founding generation is alive and active. Honoring players like Jones while they can still stand next to their statues creates a connection between eras that most global leagues lost long ago. For fans in LA, it's also a reminder that loyalty — to a club, to a city, to a sport — still gets recognized, even in a market built on spectacle.
