Rams Sign Quarterback Matthew Caldwell as UDFA Following 2026 NFL Draft

The Los Angeles Rams added former Troy and Texas quarterback Matthew Caldwell as an undrafted free agent following the 2026 NFL Draft, giving them another arm in a reshaped quarterback room.

Caldwell has just two seasons of FBS experience, serving as the starter for one of them at Troy. He finished with 1,693 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions on 63.7% completion. While those numbers won't jump off the page, Caldwell showed enough poise and athleticism to earn a training camp opportunity.

The Rams' quarterback situation has been in flux this offseason. With Matthew Stafford's future uncertain and the team moving in a younger direction across the roster, Caldwell joins a group that got significantly younger during the draft and free agency period.

At 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, Caldwell has the physical tools that NFL scouts look for, but he'll need to prove he can read NFL coverages and make quicker decisions under pressure. The transition from Troy's system to Sean McVay's complex offense is a significant jump.

UDFA quarterbacks face steep odds, but the Rams have a track record of developing unheralded talent. Caldwell will compete for a practice squad spot at minimum, with an outside shot at the third-string job if he impresses in camp.

**What This Means For You:** For Rams fans, this is a low-risk flier on a quarterback with developmental upside. Don't expect Caldwell to see the field this season, but if the Rams' quarterback situation continues to evolve, having extra arms in the system could prove valuable.
