Spurs vs. Thunder prediction, odds: 2026 NBA Western Conference finals picks for Game 1

The Western Conference Finals tip off Monday night in Oklahoma City with a storyline that couldn't be more dramatic: the defending champion Thunder, fresh off SGA's second consecutive MVP award, host a Spurs team that just lost its second-best player hours before tipoff.

San Antonio ruled De'Aaron Fox out of Game 1 with right ankle soreness on Monday evening, a devastating blow to a Spurs team that was already a significant underdog. Fox, who averaged 23.5 points and 6.5 assists per game in the semifinals against Minnesota, was expected to be the primary ball-handler and defensive assignment against SGA. Without him, San Antonio's already-thin perimeter defense takes a massive hit.

On the other side, the Thunder got good news: Jalen Williams is available for Game 1 after missing six games with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain. Coach Mark Daigneault said Williams won't have a minutes restriction, which gives Oklahoma City back a crucial two-way wing who averaged 17.1 points and 5.5 assists in the regular season.

## SGA's MVP Double — And What It Means

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named the 2026 NBA MVP on Monday, his second consecutive award. He joins an exclusive club of 14 players who have won back-to-back MVPs, a list that includes Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Nikola Jokic — the latter being the player SGA supplanted.

The numbers back it up: 31.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 6.6 assists on 55/39/88 shooting splits in the regular season. In the playoffs, he's averaging 29.1 points and 7.1 assists through eight games — all wins. Oklahoma City is a perfect 8-0 this postseason, having swept both Phoenix and the Lakers.

But here's what makes this series compelling: despite all of that, San Antonio won four of five regular-season meetings against the Thunder. The Spurs have figured something out against this OKC team, and it starts with Victor Wembanyama's ability to disrupt Oklahoma City's rim-attacking offense.

## The Wemby Factor

Victor Wembanyama finished third in MVP voting, and for good reason. His defensive impact is unlike anything the NBA has seen — a 7'4" player who can guard the perimeter, protect the rim, and switch onto guards. Against an OKC team that thrives on driving to the basket, Wembanyama is the ultimate counter.

But without Fox, the Spurs' offense becomes heavily reliant on Wembanyama creating his own shots — and the Thunder can throw more defenders at him. The model projects Wembanyama at 24.7 points in Game 1, but that's with Fox on the floor drawing attention. Without Fox, those shots get harder.

## Betting Lines and Projections

The Thunder are 6.5-point favorites at FanDuel for Game 1, with the over/under at 221.5. SGA's point total is set at 30.5, Wembanyama's at 23.5.

The SportsLine Projection Model, which is on a 26-10 roll (72%) on NBA spread picks this season, is leaning Under on the total. The Under has hit in six of the last 10 head-to-head meetings, including three of five this season. The model projects combined total points at just 213, with the Under hitting in 64% of simulations.

That makes sense given the matchup: both teams are top-5 defenses, and the Spurs without Fox will struggle to generate offense, which could drag the game into a grind.

## What This Means For You

**If you're watching tonight**: This is the best series of the playoffs so far on paper. Two MVP candidates, the defending champs vs. the franchise that won four titles in the 2010s. Fox's absence is a storyline that could change by Game 2, but it significantly shifts Game 1 in OKC's favor.

**If you're betting**: The Under at 221.5 looks like the strongest play based on the model projections and the head-to-head trends. A Spurs +6.5 cover is also possible if Wembanyama has a dominant defensive game, but without Fox, the spread is fair.

**If you're a Spurs fan**: The season isn't over because Fox is out for one game. Ankle soreness can resolve quickly, and the Spurs' 4-1 regular-season record against OKC suggests the matchup is favorable. But Game 1 is going to be an uphill battle on the road without your point guard.

Tipoff is at 8:30 PM ET on ESPN. The defending champs versus the rising force. It doesn't get much better than this.
