AI Data Centers Are Driving Up Your Electric Bill — And It's Getting Worse

A new investigation reveals that the massive expansion of AI data centers across the American South is directly contributing to rising residential electricity costs. Georgia, Virginia, and Texas have seen some of the steepest increases, with utility companies passing the cost of new infrastructure — transmission lines, substations, and generation capacity needed to feed power-hungry server farms — directly to ratepayers.

Patty Durand, founder of Georgians for Affordable Energy, says the problem is systemic. Tech companies promise jobs and tax revenue, but the costs fall disproportionately on residents who had no say in the decision to approve these facilities. A single large data center can consume as much electricity as a small city, and the AI boom has triggered a construction spree that shows no signs of slowing.

The numbers are staggering. U.S. data center electricity consumption is projected to triple by 2030, driven primarily by AI workloads that require far more computing power than traditional cloud services. Utility regulators in several states have already approved rate increases to fund the grid upgrades needed to keep up, with more requests pending.

The issue has become politically potent. In Georgia, state legislators have introduced bills requiring data center operators to pay a larger share of infrastructure costs, but tech industry lobbying has watered down the proposals.
