Is it time to upgrade your PC or buy a new one?

If you've priced computer components lately, you've probably noticed something unsettling: memory costs significantly more than it did a year ago. The culprit isn't supply chain disruptions or manufacturing problems — it's artificial intelligence, and its insatiable appetite for RAM is reshaping the entire PC market.
The question millions of consumers are now facing is straightforward but surprisingly complicated: should you upgrade your current computer or bite the bullet and buy a new one? The answer depends on a convergence of factors that make 2026 one of the worst times in recent memory to be a PC buyer on a budget.
Let's start with the numbers. DDR5 memory, which has become the standard for modern systems, saw price increases of 40 to 60 percent between mid-2025 and mid-2026. The primary driver is AI. Data centers and enterprise customers are buying enormous quantities of high-bandwidth memory to fuel their GPU clusters and AI training infrastructure. Manufacturers, seeing higher margins in the enterprise market, have shifted production capacity away from consumer-grade modules.
Graphics cards tell a similar story. NVIDIA's consumer GPU supply has been constrained by the company's pivot toward AI accelerators, which command far higher margins than gaming cards. The RTX 5060, which launched at $399, now regularly sells for $500 or more at major retailers. AMD's Radeon lineup has seen similar, though less dramatic, price inflation.
Storage offers a small bright spot. NVMe SSD prices have remained relatively stable, with 2TB drives available for under $120. If your current system uses SATA storage, upgrading to an NVMe boot drive remains one of the best value improvements you can make.
So when does upgrading make sense? If your current PC has a recent-generation processor — think Intel 12th gen or newer, AMD Ryzen 5000 or newer — and a decent power supply, adding more RAM and swapping your GPU can extend its life meaningfully. But here's the catch: if your system uses DDR4, upgrading to DDR5 requires a new motherboard and CPU anyway, at which point you're essentially building a new computer.
For systems older than four years, the calculus shifts toward replacement. A new prebuilt PC from Dell, HP, or Lenovo will include current-generation components at prices that, while higher than they were a year ago, are often competitive with the cost of piecemeal upgrades. Manufacturers negotiate bulk pricing on components that individual consumers simply cannot access.
Laptops present their own challenges. Most thin-and-light laptops solder their memory to the motherboard, making upgrades impossible. If you bought a laptop with 8GB of RAM in 2023, you're likely feeling the squeeze now, and your only option is replacement. The one upgrade most laptops do support — storage — is worth doing if you can swap in a larger SSD.
The used market offers some relief. Refurbished business laptops from Lenovo's ThinkPad line and Dell's Latitude series can be excellent values, often available with 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSDs for under $400. These machines are built to last and typically come with better keyboards and build quality than consumer-grade alternatives at similar price points.
There's also the question of timing. Industry analysts expect memory prices to begin stabilizing in late 2026 as new fabrication capacity comes online. If you can wait until the holiday shopping season, you may find significantly better deals. But if your current machine is failing or struggling with daily tasks, waiting isn't always realistic.
What This Means For You: If your PC is still meeting your needs, hold off on major upgrades until memory prices normalize — likely late 2026 or early 2027. If you must upgrade now, focus on SSD storage first (best value), then GPU (if you game or create content), and RAM last (most inflated pricing). If your system is more than four years old, a new prebuilt or refurbished business laptop will likely give you better value than incremental upgrades. And whatever you buy, make sure it has at least 16GB of RAM — 8GB is no longer sufficient for comfortable daily use in 2026.
