Why I stopped relying on Google Maps in Android Auto - and the app I use instead

After years of loyal Google Maps usage, a growing number of drivers are making the switch to alternative navigation apps in Android Auto — and the reasons reveal as much about Google's product decisions as they do about the competition.
The complaints are consistent: Google Maps in Android Auto has become slower to load, more aggressive about rerouting for marginal time savings, and increasingly cluttered with ads and promoted locations. The final straw for many users was the addition of sponsored search results that appear above actual navigation matches — a feature that feels particularly dangerous when you're trying to find an address while driving.

The alternative getting the most attention is Waze (ironically owned by Google), which offers a more streamlined driving experience with real-time hazard reporting. But other users are switching to organic maps like Organic Maps or Magic Earth, which offer offline navigation without data harvesting.
The broader issue is feature creep. Google Maps started as a navigation tool and has become a local search engine, review platform, advertising vehicle, and social network — all wrapped in an interface that was designed for none of those things. The driving experience has suffered as a result.
For Android Auto users specifically, the integration issues compound the problem. Laggy voice commands, delayed rerouting, and occasional crashes have been reported across multiple phone models and vehicle brands, suggesting the issue is with the app rather than hardware.
What This Means For You: If Google Maps has been frustrating you in the car, you have options. Waze is the easiest switch — same ecosystem, different experience. Organic Maps and Magic Earth require more setup but offer stronger privacy and reliable offline navigation. The best navigation app is the one that gets you where you're going without distracting you from the road. Right now, that might not be Google Maps.
